For the north there borders on the sea Cantabrico, which does that Sopelana has spectacular cliffs and beaches (Barinatxe, Arrietara, Atxabiribil and Meñakoz). The municipality of Cask is placed to the North-East, Getxo to the northwest, Urduliz in the southeast and Berango to the south-west, limiting the municipality and sharing some of his more important geographical features. Thus Urduliz and Sopelana shares the hill range of Freidemendi, place where the Rock of Santa Marina is located, while in the limit with Berango we can find Urkogane, Sahierri, Sopelamendi and Munarrikolanda, elevations of less than 300 meters

The dolmens of Munarrikolanda or the establishment of Kurtzio demonstrate that the Sopelana history goes back to the prehistory, since in both deposits the remains can be contemplated archaeological of an establishment used by the man from prehistoric epochs.

The traces of the Roman presence in Sopelana were principally in the environment of the Church of San Pedro, where they located diverse ceramic materials. Close to the cliff of the beach Atxabiribil discovered a terra sigilata fragment, possibly of the IIIrd century A.D. Sopelana receives the denomination of Porch.

Sopelana has several churches and chapels, of big beauty and value architectural. Gonzalo de Sopelana built the Church of San Pedro, of Renaissance style (XVIth century), which was reformed in the centuries XVIII and XIX adding the famous baroque tower to him. The coat of arms of the lineage of the Sopelana, founders of the church, is composed by two keys in cross and four hearts and it is possible to observe in front of the church.

Inside there is the Image of San Pedro of the XVIth century, her Size of the Blessed Virgin of the school of Gregorio Hernández of the century XVI and the Bank of the Faithful Councilor, carved in wood. The church of San Pedro is placed in the center of the municipality and is characterized by his tower and by being identical with target.

The chapel of Carmen is located in the Larrabasterra quarter and is of modern construction and that of San Andrés, it located in the highway to Plencia, it is a rustic construction in stone (XIIIth century) that was reconstructed by it in 1970. In the Rocks of Santa Marina, next to municipal Urduliz term, finds the chapel of the same one name, from that the coast of Biscay is discerned, from Top Bright star up to the end Villain.
